Not every technical official carries a whistle.
Every VBL game at Blackburn requires our crew at the table to run smoothly. That’s the scoretable officials keeping the official record and running the clocks, and the statisticians capturing every basket, rebound and turnover as it happens. They work hand in hand with the referees and teams, and the game can't run properly without them.
If you love basketball and want to be involved, but don’t want to or can’t get on court, this is a great option. Additionally if you’re already a referee this is a great way to get involved at a VBL level to see how gameday works and improve your skills and rule knowledge.
Our scoretable and stats crews work our VBL home games, which is the highest level of basketball we host. That means you're courtside for the best games we have, as part of the crew that makes the night happen. It's a rewarding way to stay involved in the game, and you're reimbursed for every game you work.
Scoretable and statistics are two separate roles, each with its own accreditation, so we've set them out separately below. That being said, plenty of people end up doing both.
WHY BECOME A Technical official?

Scoretable and stats crews are rostered through the Refbook platform, just like our referees. You set your availability for each week so Scoretable and Stats can fit around your schedule.

New scoretable officials start next to someone who's been doing it for a while, so you build confidence game by game.

You'll need to purchase the official Basketball Victoria uniform down the track, but you won't need to bring any equipment of your own.

We welcome new scoretable officials and statisticians throughout the year, not just at the start of the season.
Statisticians
What the role involves
Statisticians record the game live using the Basketball Statistics Computer Program: points, rebounds, assists, fouls, turnovers and more. This helps spectators engage better with the game and allows teams to scout and adjust throughout the game based on what the numbers tell them. You’ll also work closely with the Scoretable and Referees in game to make sure things go smoothly.
Getting started
You'll need to be 14 or older with a basic knowledge of basketball. Some familiarity with computers helps. To get accredited, you'll complete a Statistician's Course run by Basketball Victoria. It takes around two to three hours and covers your Level 1 accreditation and how to use the stats software. Your accreditation is recognised right across Australia.
Course dates come through Basketball Victoria, so the best first step is to email us and we'll let you know when the next one is on.
Where it can take you
After 12 months at Level 1, you can go for your Level 2, which involves an online exam and a practical evaluation. Just like scoretable, we'll nominate you and work with Basketball Victoria to keep you developing.
What skills can I gain?

You’ll need to know exactly when a player fouls out, when a coach is out of timeouts and what happens to the shot clock after every whistle. You'll learn the rules in depth, because you'll be applying them live.

Every point, foul and timeout gets recorded. You'll get good at staying locked in for a full game and getting it right the first time.

You're constantly talking with the rest of the table, the referees and coaches, often in a noisy stadium with a lot going on. Clear, calm communication becomes second nature.

Close games, late clock changes and busy benches all end up at the table. You'll learn to stay steady when the game gets tight.

Everyone depends on the team. You'll be part of a crew that has to work as one for the whole game.

Whether you're on scoretable or stats, you'll start seeing basketball the way technical officials do.
Scoretable Officials
What the role involves
The scoretable keep the official record of the game. Depending on your seat, you'll be keeping the scoresheet, running the game clock or shot clock, or operating the scoreboard. You're also the referees' link to the table, keeping them across fouls, timeouts, substitutions and anything else that affects the game. It's a team effort. A good table crew and a good referee crew make each other's night a lot easier.
Getting started
Start with the online Level 1 Scoretable Course on Basketball Australia's eTrainU platform. It costs around $10 and you'll receive a certificate when you finish.

Then get in touch with us. We work directly with Basketball Victoria on courses and accreditation, so reaching out means we can let you know what's coming up and get you started on game days.
When you start, you'll be placed with a more experienced scoretable official who'll help you get comfortable. Nobody gets thrown in the deep end.
Where it can take you
There are five accreditation levels. Level 1 gives you the foundation skills and knowledge to work at VBL level. Level 2 qualifies you to work every position on the table. Level 3 is for officials with a thorough command of the rules and how they're applied. Level 4 officials are selected onto national panels and work competitions like the NBL, WNBL and National Championships, and Level 5 is FIBA international accreditation.
Once you've got your Level 1, if you want to progress, we'll work with Basketball Victoria on your progression, so you're not navigating the pathway on your own.
Already a referee?
We actively encourage our referees to pick up scoretable or stats. A number of our referees work their domestic games on a Saturday and then do VBL on Saturday evenings and Sunday. The referee and scoretable sides of the program work closely together, so we make sure your games don't clash.
It's great for your refereeing too. Getting on scoretable and stats sharpens your rule knowledge, and you get to watch high level basketball from a technical official's seat, letting you see how referees at that level manage a game.
